SOPHIA BBUNSON '" MAKING USE OF OUR RESOURCES As th New Year dawns with the promises it holds of faith, hope and work, let us meet it and gifts which God has given us. to do our best with the strength bravely with the determination "If I only had the money and the health, I could do so much for people. As it is, I am not strong, and haven't much money; for that reason I can do very little." Thus wailed a well-meaning woman wom-an who accomplished but little for her family, and certainly made but few efforts to do any worthwhile worth-while work on the outside. There have been thousands of badly handicapped people who have done great things, not only for themselves, but for humanity. Look at Robert Louis Stevenson. Steven-son. He had an advanced case of tuberculosis, yet his busy brain and pen were active until the very last day of his life. Beloved of the gentle people of Samoa, among whom he spent his last days, he was buried by their hands on the spot that he had chosen. He wrote the following epitaph for himself, which can be read today up6n his tomb: Under the,.wide and starry sky, Dig the grave and let me lie; Glad did I live and gladly die And I laid me down with a will. This be the verse you grave for me; Here he lies where longed to be, Home is the sailor, home from the sea. And the hunter home from the hill." Much of his work was done in pain and weakness but his stories still live on in the hearts of youth. Florence Nightingale returned from' the Crimea an invalid worn out by toil and enfeebled by disease, dis-ease, but for fifty-four years she worked unceasingly in any cause to benefit humanity. She constantly con-stantly rote and advocated reforms. re-forms. Wrought until her last breath to improve the lot of the 1 poor and sick, and kings and the great, paid her homage. The lives that have been saved and the alleviation al-leviation of human suffering that she has; brought to the earth cannot can-not be estimated. Many of our boys are returning from the battle grounds of th world with great handicaps. They are bravely facing the problems of adjustment. They have the determination to overcome and succeed. Daily they are taking their places in useful and constructive con-structive work in the world. |
