Show TIME NOW FOR C O U RA G E AND LOYALTY The German offensive may have amazed and stupefied some Americans Amer-icans and our people may be dis-sapointed dis-sapointed and distressed, humiliated humili-ated and chagrined, alarmed and afraid, as some people assert. If such is the truth as to the mental state of the people of this country, it reflects upon their courage even while it displays an unjustified egotism. The official leaders of this nation, na-tion, with some few exceptions, have warned us for many months of the hard struggle ahead. Few of them encouraged the easy optimism opti-mism that surged through the public mind after the spectacular vistory in the Battle of France. While it is natural for us to regret the success of the German Army, even if it proves to be temporary, tem-porary, there is no occasion for stupefaction, humiliation andfeavr Regardless of the outcome of the present offensive, instigated by Marshal von Rundstedt, the Germans Ger-mans will be whipped and the Americans will do their share of the job. If the myth of invincibility, which mysteriously seems to surround sur-round Americans, has been shattered shat-tered and we have learned, as a people, that ordinary rules of warfare war-fare and of nature operate against Americans as well as other people, peo-ple, the net result mbay be beneficial. bene-ficial. The search for a "goat" to excuse our reverse indicates, however, how-ever, the eagerness of a people to hold firm to their myth rather than face the hard facts of life. |
