Show MANY SOLDIERS TRANSPORTED PAST THREE YEARS Nearly 23 million soldiers have been carried on TJ. S. railroads since Pearl Harbor, Major General Gen-eral Gross, chief of transportation, transporta-tion, reports. The figure doesn't include the millions of soldiers who moved at the same time either in small groups or on furlough. The 23 millions moved in organized groups, handling of which required re-quired 196,000 passenger cars, 334,000 sleeping cars, 103,000 baggage bag-gage and kitchen cars and 148,000 refrigerator, box gondola and flat cars. It required an average of 24 cars to handle each 1,000 men. These figures do not include the number of sailors, marines and others in other branches of the military service. It might also interest in-terest you to know that in the same period, Pearl Harbor to July 1, this year, the railroads 'handled 'han-dled 172,800,000 tons of War Department De-partment freight and 600,000 tons of express. |
