Show ? ICE COVERAGE " KILLS FISH IN FAIRVIEW LAKE An exceptionally long period of dee coverage during the past winter win-ter was responsible for the kill of native trout in Fairview lakes at the upper part of Gooseberry creek in Sanpete county, Marlon J. Madsen, superintendent of fisheries fish-eries management for the state game department, announced today. to-day. "A serious suffocation took place in the largest of the three Fairview lakes with a resultant very large kill of trout," Mr. Madsen said following his return from a survey of the area. "After checking with the irrigation irri-gation company and residents, we discovered there had been an exceptionally ex-ceptionally long period, from the middle of October until May 10, when the lake was covered with heavy ice. Cakes of ice were still to be seen on May 16, date of investigation." Planting of natives in the largest larg-est Fairview lake, which covers about 150 acres, was started three years ago, Mr. Madsen explained. Subsequent plantings were made in 1944 and 1945. "This kill of trout through suffocation suf-focation is very disappointing," Mr. Madsen asserted. "We have had the utmost cooperation from the irrigation company and had every reason to believe that Fair-view Fair-view could be developed into a productive fishing area." Mr. Madsen also reported that almost a 100 per cent kill through suffocation took place during the past winter in Rex's reservoir in Salina canyon. |
