Hugh Doherty, pioneer tennis player, who died here yesterday, never was defeated in the Davis cup matches in which he and his brother, Reginald, represented Great Britain from 1902 to 1906. Reginald Reg-inald once lost a singles match by default. de-fault. Reginald was English singles champion from 1897 to 1900. and Hugh from 1902 to 1906. The brothers held the English doubles title from 1S97 to 1905, except in 1902, and the French doubles from 1900 to 1905. Hugh was the French singles champion from 1S9S to 1906. The Doherty brothers were the pioneers pio-neers of the modern game of tennis, introducing the fast serve and the speedy play that lifted the game from the sphere of a mere pastime. |
