Show A. P. NOT CONTROLLED. Senator Smoot makes a vicious attack at-tack upon the Associated Press in attempting at-tempting to justify his course in regard to ratification of the league of nations covenant. After saying that he would not be surprised to see President' Wil-. j son approve of the resolutions outlined in his letter, he goes on to say that 11 have no doubt but that the controlled con-trolled Associated Press would put the question in such a way as to make it appear as a complete victory on the i part of tho president. " Now. it so happens that the chief glory of the Associated As-sociated Press is that it gets the news from all corners of the earth and puts it upon the wire without fear or favor. The general manager is a Republican and a majority of the directors belong to the same political party. The charge that it is controlled by the administration adminis-tration is absurd as well as untrue. The news stories sent out from Washington by the Associated Press tell what actually actu-ally happens and they are not colored for partisan purposes. The Universal Service, controlled by W. B-. Hearst, colors all of its stories to suit the wishes of the owner. Mr. Hearst is leaving no stone unturned in his efforts to cause the rejection of the league covenant, cove-nant, and his Washington stories are tainted from beginning to end. They are published by those opposed to the league in preference to the reliable stories sent out by thus Associated Press, which is not controlled by either of the great parties, and which does not distort dis-tort news for propaganda purposes. Senator Smoot owes the Associated Press an apology. |
