Show ONLY BEST TENnJIS PLIMCOIEST Special to Tha Tribune. CHICAGO, Aug. 12. Among the thousands thou-sands of spectators who will witness the national tennis championships at Forest For-est Hills the week of August 25, there will be few to realize the-amount of detailed de-tailed preparation involved in the successful suc-cessful holding of such an event. The mere matter of the entry cannot be ignored, ig-nored, fur with the qualifications set up as a requisite of the players who compete com-pete for this title, there are a number of points that must be given attention. The United States preceded the English En-glish in changing the championship from a wide-open affair, but even the English En-glish had to modify the all-comers feature fea-ture and had a committee to pass on entries at Wimbledon this year. Otherwise, they would have been swamped with entries whom they designate desig-nate as "rabbits" players who do well enough, but who have no chance to win the tournament, and drag it out to an' unwieldy length. The United Slates N. L. T. A. three years ago established qualifications under un-der which the committee hopes to ' keep the entry to 12S and thus complete the play in seven days. Entries are accepted accept-ed from players who have been ranked within the hist five years or have even been ranked in the first twenty, or who, within three years, have been semi-finalisLs semi-finalisLs or better in two sanctioned tournaments; tour-naments; or who, in the current season, have made a reasonably good record in three sanctioned tournaments; or those whose entries are acceptable "by reason of residence in foreign countries''; promise prom-ise nf skill or other circumstances are deemed sufficient to cause exceptions in their cases. After the draw has been made, the commit tee arranges a schedule of matches for the first day. This caps for three matches on each of the twenty courts which tho West Side club hns n v.-iiUi ble for the tournn meat. The first wiil go on n t 1 o'clock, the next ;i t 3 and the third at 5, or ;is close to those hours as conditions permit. |
