The Giants and the Cincinnati Reds are exactly four and a half gam us apart tonight. to-night. Tomorrow they will stage a series of three consecutive double-headers. Upon this series the pennant of the National Na-tional league may be said to depend. If the Reds are fortunate enough to win the whole six or even five of the six games, they practically will clinch the flag. The Reds will be satisfied to split the series, as that will keep them up in -front and send them away to meet weak teams, while the Giants are playing Chicago, ! St. Louis' and Pittsburg, who have been giving them trouble in the last' two . weeks. Test for Giants. If the Giants' pennant chances are to be taken seriously, they must win at least four of the six games. In the next three weeks the Giants is the only team that can be depended upon to halt the Reds. The Giants will be either on their way to the championship at the end of this week or a badly licked team. In the battles this week McGrnw seems to have t lie edge on Cincinnati in the pitchers. Nehf, Barnes, Douglas, Benton and Toney mav be depended upon to pitch good bail. Toney has not quite recovered from the prostration which he suffered In St. Louis, but will be able to pitch one game. Douglas and Nehf will probably prob-ably pitch two games each. Kenton Is in good shape now, and Barnes, the Giants' new pitching ace, after his fine game against Brooklyn today, fihould be able to tame the Reds in at least one game. Desoite the disasters that encountered the Giants on their recent invasion of the west, the pitching staff has been doing fine work. Up to Hitters. No pitcher is expected to win If the team Is not batting. Unless the Giant sluggers can recover from their slump, the best kind of pitching will witi no games for them.
