By WALTER ECKERSALL. (Chicago Tribune Special Service.) CHICAGO, Nov. 23. The most successful suc-cessful football year since the. adoption of the forward pass and ten-yard line rule some thirteen years ago came to a close Saturday, Satur-day, when Illinois won the Western conference con-ference chanrolonship by defeating Ohio State, 9 to 7, and Harvard triumphed over its ancient rival, Yale, by a score of 10 to 3. The attendance this season has exceeded exceed-ed even prewar crowds, and the big crowds brought real money to the gates. Tn winning from Ohio State, Illinois de-i de-i serves ail the credit which can possibly be bestowed on the coaches and players-It players-It developed into a team of remarkable ! strength in less than a month's time. Al- I though beaten by Wisconsin in the middle j of the season, it showed the proper foot- ball stuff by going Into succeeding battles with renewed fight, which resulted in its; winning the title. Illinois won six of its ; seven conference games and Ohio won . three of its four. Illinois is one of the gamest elevens ; which has appeared on a western grid- , iron in years. Some of the players were' hurt In the early part of the year and few of them were laid oiY long enough to re- I cover entirely. They were sent into I games whrn they should have been in thej stands. They did not complain or protest. pro-test. They simply did what they were told, no matter how painful, and this accounts ac-counts for the championship. Badgers Beat Maroons. Chicago was knocked out of second place in the conference rating by losing to Wis- i consin, 10 to 3. The Badgers' great game against Ohio a week ago plainly showed the Cardinal eleven was one of offensive and defensive power. It recovered rapidly from its defeat by Minnesota, and at the close of the year was playing just as good football as any eleven in tho Big Ten. As expects, Minnesota took Michigan into camp, 3- 7 Tho Gophers showed the improvement characteristic of former Gopher teams late In the season. Michigan Michi-gan experienced its worst season in years, winning only one conference game, and that from Northwestern. Coach Yost Blmply did not have the material this year to cope with other conference elevens which were stronger than usual. Indiana sprang a surprise by defeating Syracuse, one of the strongest elevens in the east. It will be remembered that Northwestern defeated the Hoosiers, 3 to 2, and that Syracuse won easily from Rutgers. Just today Rutgers won from Northwestern, 23 to 0, which goes ' to. show there is no such thing as form In football this year. Coach Stiehm was hand.ranpcd ail season hy injuries, and . his team was Just beginning to find Itself as the curtain dropped on the season. Notre Dame Undefeated. Notre Dame continued to keep Its slate clean by winning from Purdue, 33 to 13, In a game which gives Coach Rockne's eleven tho chnmplonshlp of the Hoosler stale. The Cardinals are a strong scor'ng agrregation, which was shown In this contest. Iowa annexed the championship of tho Hawkeye state by trimming Amos, 10 to 0, In an interesting battle. The struggle marked tho end of the moat successful season In years for Coach Jones's eleven. The loam lost two conference games, one to Illinois, 9 to ", and the other to Chicago, Chi-cago, 9 to 6. Nort fa western showed eastern football fans how tho forward pass should be executed, although it was beaten by Rutgers. 21 to The Purple played the best football it knew, but the great strength of the easterners' line proved the undoing of the western aggregation. Eaatern critics who saw Rutgers win othftr gaiQM asserted that the line played 90 pr rent better football against Northwestern North-western than It did In any other contest. Harvard's Victory.
