The expansion of foreign trade, aided by an augmented merchant mer-chant marine, already is exciting the 'concern of competitor nations. It is significant that much of the increaso reported in exports is credited to Latin-American countries. Here is n field which the United States can be depended de-pended upon to develop, despite the fact that at least two European .exporting .ex-porting nations have had the advantage advan-tage of priority in those markets. FOREIGN TRADE. An indication of what may bo expected ex-pected when America's post-wnr commerce com-merce is more than fairly started on its anticipated growth is afforded by a statement just issued by the- bureau of foreign and domestic commerce. The figures aro for tho month of October, Oc-tober, and they show that l'nited States exports for tho fhirty-ono day period were valued at (652,000,000, an increase of more than 35,000,000 over the preceding month of September nnd $130,000,000 over Ihoso in October of Inst year. Hound figures nro used in this instance. Kxporls for the ten months ended with October wro valued val-ued at $6,501,000,000, an increase of $1, 1 10,000,000 compared with the corresponding cor-responding period butt year. October imports totnled $110,000,000, n decrens" of $20,000,000 from the high mark of September, but nn increase of $lfio,ooo,ooo over those of October of last year. For the ten months' period imports amounted to $.1,11:1,000,000, nn increase of 51.1,000,000 over II.. cor responding period of I0IH.
