The big subjects before the conference in its last week is the selection of members mem-bers of the governing body of the International Inter-national Labor Union Office, which is designed de-signed to be the permanent labor organization organ-ization associated with the league of nations. na-tions. Its function will be to act as a clearing house for all Information on all international labor problems, to register laws and regulations and to prepare the agenda for the annual conferences. The following principles have been agreed to in the various committees and win be submitted to the conference this week for final approval: 1 The adoption of fhe eight-hour day. with several minor provisos. 2. The prohibition of work in indur-tries indur-tries between 10 p. m. and 5 a. m. for all women. ?.. Prohibition of the employment in industry in-dustry of children under 11 years of age, except that Japan has agreed and India has been asked to raise the limit in their respective countries from 9 to 12. with 14 as the eventual standard. Special reports also are to be received on unemployment. the employment of. women before and after child-birth and the employment of children at night. The conference opened its sessions on October 23 and expects to keep to its schedule of adjournment by November 29, in order to allow many of the delegates to return to their homes as early as possible. |
