THE National Helail Grocers -null hold their annual convention at the Hotel Utah commencing Monday, and ejaborate plans have been arranged for their entertainment. entertain-ment. Delegates have already begun to arrive, and, according to T. S. Davis, Da-vis, chairman of the automobile and reception re-ception committee, more than 2000 members are expected to attend. The advance reservations made at the Hotel Ho-tel Utah show that some of the biggest merchants and business men of the country will attend. The business of the convention will embrace the vital questions pertaining to the trade relations affecting this country at this time and include addresses ad-dresses from men of high authority in the nation. One of the most important topics to be discussed will be "Cash and Carry vs. Credit and Delivery," by Leon M. Hattenbach, trustee of the national association. Mr. Hattenbach has given this subject much study and it is expected that he will clear up several sev-eral points of contention among the retail re-tail grocers who are against the nondelivery non-delivery system. National Officers to Attend. The national officers who will attend are President John H. Schaefer, Davenport, Daven-port, lowra; John A. Ulmor, Toledo, Ohio, vice president: Frank B. Connolly, Connol-ly, San Francisco, Past president; "William "Wil-liam Jeffery, New Vork, treasurer, and Trustees H. A. Spinney of Massachusetts, Massachu-setts, E. V. Lyons of Louisiana and Leon M. Hattenbach of Colorado. The officers of the Utah State association, asso-ciation, who will have charge of the convention, are: D. A. Affleck, president; pres-ident; J. W. Wilcox, . vice president; Edwin Wright, treasurer; William Mur-dock, Mur-dock, secretary; John H. Harper, assistant as-sistant secretary. The board of directors direc-tors follows: . F. E. Williams, chairman, Ogden; T. S. Davis, C. M. Lees, G. A. Nicholas,. W. T. Pickett, Louis Schank, John H. Tillotson, B. M. Olson, John McCullough, W. A. James, A. Coop and Charles Cottrell. Jr. A forty-mile automobile ride will be given the delegates Sunday evening, leaving the Hotel Utah at 5 o'clock, going south on Main to Cactus street, turn east on Cae-tus to State street, south on State to Fourth South, thence east to Sixth East, thence south into Liberty park, go around park once, thence down center and out the southwest south-west entrance. Thence down Fifth East to Twenty-first South. Turn west to State, thence south on State to forty-eighth forty-eighth south, thence east to Wasatch Jersey farm, thence east to Hollidav and Twenty-third east, thence nortn on Twenty-third east to Thirty-ninth South, turn east one block, go north to ''The Oaks," thence west to count' road, thence north on county road to Twenty-first South, thence east to penitentiary, pen-itentiary, thence north one block, thence west to Thirteenth East, north to Yale avenue, east to Fifteenth East, north of Douglas Heighths, west to East high school, north to University of Utah, thence through Federal Heights to Fort Douglas. From Fort Douglas north to " Bonneville-on-the-hill. " North via boulevard. to City Creek canyon, then follow boulevard around to state capitol, thence to Mc Donald's roof garden, 159 West Broadway, Broad-way, where dinner will be served. Organ Recital Planned. That thero will bo something doing ever - minute is assured by B. M. OU son, chairman of the amusement committee, com-mittee, starting with a breakfast for the national officials and visiting ladies at the Hotel Utah Monday morning. At noon an organ recital wiil be given at the tabernacle, after which a visit to the temple grounds, with a historical guide lecturer, will be made. The Asparagus As-paragus club banquet will end tho activities ac-tivities of the first day as far as known at the present time, although it is expected that several stunts will bo put on by the delegates themselves. Tuesday promises to be a strenuous day for- those who participate in all the festivities planned. In tho morning morn-ing breakfast will bo served for all the state presidents, state secretaries and the trade press, after which the ladies arc scheduled to make an automobile trip about tho city, returning at noon for luncheon on the roof garden. The convention will adjourn at -1 o'clock, after which all will go by special trains to Saltair, where many unique attractions attrac-tions havo been arranged aside from tho bathing. Wednesday tho convention will adjourn ad-journ at noon and immediately leave for Ogden, where the retail grocers have arranged for a banquet lo be given in (ho Hermitage Inn. Other entertainment en-tertainment will follow (ho banquet. The address of welcome will be given by Jlavor W. Mont Ferry, and response will" bo made by John A. U liner, vice president, of the National Association of Retail GrOcers. William Murdock will give the welcome to Salt Lake, to which the response will bo made by H. A. Spinney, trustee of the national association. as-sociation. President J. H. Schaefer will then deliver an address covering the topics which the convention will take up. Committees to Be Named. Following the president's address the appointment of committees will take place. The committees to be appointed follow: Committee on credentials, auditing au-diting committee and rules and order of business. The afternoon session will open with the hearing of reports from the officers, in the following order: Secretary, John J. Eyan; treasurer, William Jeffrey; trade relations, J. H. Speas; ways and means, J. A. Cunningham; Cun-ningham; legislative. George M. Peterson; Pe-terson; trade acceptance, J. S. Carver; bulletiu, U. F. Jehle. An address will be given by Carl W. Brand, president National Coffee Roasters' Roast-ers' association. The business of the first day will then be concluded by the address of Mr. Hattenbach. A noval feature of the convention is the committee composed of the women, of which Mrs. L. Schank of Salt Lake is the chairman. This committee was inaugurated for the purpose of arranging arrang-ing entertainment for the ladies accompanying accom-panying their husbands to the convention, conven-tion, and an attractive program is being be-ing prepared. The ladies on the general reception committee are Mesdames Affleck, Af-fleck, Olson, T. S. Davis, Al Davis, McCullough, Mc-Cullough, Wright, Cottrell, Poulton, Schank, Carver, Williams, Coop, Nicholas, Nicho-las, Wilcox, Petty, Tillotsen, James and Pickett. The committee having charge of the Hotel Utah roof , garden entertainments enter-tainments are Mesdames T. S. Davis. E. Wright, Louis Schank, D. A. Affleck and William Murdock. Entertainments at McDonald's roof garden will be in charge of Mesdames Harper, Olsen, McCullough, Cottrell and A. Davis. Mesdames Poulton and Murdock will have charge of all musical musi-cal recitals and entertainments, while Mesdames Wright, Affleck and A. Davis Da-vis will compose the floral committee. Saltair Frolic Planned. During the past two davs an erroneous er-roneous report has been circulated to the effect that- Saltair will be closed to the public next Tuesday, when the Retail Re-tail . Merchants ' association gathers at the resort for an outing. This is not true, according to announcement, an-nouncement, today bv Manager Joseph Nelson of Saltair, who states that tho resort is open every day to the public until the close of tho season ou Labor day. "It is not true that the resort will be closed next Tuesdav to the public." said Mr. Nelson, "nor is it true that the public will be excluded on anv other day. The one day closing last Wednesday Wednes-day for the Rotarians, at the request of the Salt Lake Rotary club, was the one exception to be made to tho rule, which holds that Saltair is for all the people all tho time. The Retail Merchants will enjoy tho day Tuesdav at. Saltair, but the public is invited ami there will be no exclusion whatsoever. " |
