Show - FOOD FOR HUNS. Foodstuffs to he amount of 370,000 tons monthly are to bo turned over to the Germans. The conditions imposed by the allied commission provido for the turning over of German merchant shipping and German-owned securities in payment for the food shipments. Congress Con-gress voted one hundred million dollars for the purpose of feeding the destitute Europeans in order to stop the spread of Bolshevism, but there was no inttui-jtiijn inttui-jtiijn upon the part of any branch of the American government to feed the Ger-j Ger-j mans so long as thry were able to pay j lor what they receive. Xo doubt there is destitution in some purliuns of the once proud aud haughty empire, but those who possess means are in no dau-ger dau-ger of death by starvation, unless the radicals gain control aud follow the example ex-ample of the Eussian anarchists and destroy de-stroy or waste everything in sight. But the German government must pay for the food furnished the Hun Bolshevists, for the Eurupean allies will not give their scanty stores away and the United States has reached the limit iu bustow-iing bustow-iing charity upon the undeserving. The I Russians are also pleading for Ameri-jcan Ameri-jcan food, and they will get it if they have the price. We are under obligations obliga-tions as a Christian people to look out for the welfare of the long oppressed or submerged races of Europe, but we must draw the line somewhere. The Germans, no doubt, dislike to give up their merchant vessels and securities. But such is the fortune of war, and they alone are responsible. |
