Show THE NATIVE-BORN ALIEN. A theater full of sympathizers with the peculiar brand of patriotism which Eugene Debs has been illustrating, illustrat-ing, in the years of his activities a3 an agitator and lawbreaker, raised their hands at aa invitation by the .speaker of tho evening the meeting was called in Cleveland to protest the ten-year seu-tenco seu-tenco imposed on Debs to stand ready either to see that Debs was out of prison as soon as he got in it, or get themselves behind tho bars to keep him eomapny. It may be remarked in passing that perseverance in their program likely will result in the latter alternative coming com-ing to pass. But the incident deserves serious attention; It illustrates the fact that in this nation there are far too many so-called citizens whose rights to that citizenship are restricted to tho accident of birthplace. In other essentials essen-tials these Amorican-borns are aliens. They have citizenship and they enjoy the privilege of he suffrage. Eut they are as un-American as the Bolsheviki in Russia. '. ' - Recent strike disturbances have developed de-veloped the fact that most of the leaders lead-ers in industrial upheavals are men holding their citizenship in other countries. coun-tries. Their work is being seconded, howover, by others of the Debs and John Reed brood. And these can appeal ap-peal for encouragement in" their propaganda propa-ganda of social unrest and disturbance on the plea that they are American-born American-born citizens of the republic whose institutions in-stitutions they are assailing. Clearly, one of the obligations resting upon patriotic Americans is the duty of exacting from the beneficiaries of our common citizenship obedience to its laws. And one of the problems with which the near future must grapple is that of dealing with the menace of the native-born alien. 1 We can stop the other brood at tho ports of entry. Their fellow undesirables, however, cannot be deported. |
