The spirited rsce for league leadership in the National Na-tional and American circuits continues. Last week brought new occupants for first place, and the National league especially espe-cially saw some rapid changes. Chicago held the lead in the National last Monday morning. New York went into the lead after Monday's games, only to move back when Philadelphia forged ahead Tuesday. Pat Moran's men, who won thirteen out of fifteen games against the western teams, held tightly to first place, while New York and Chicago divided di-vided four games in the fight, for second place, which ended Saturday with New York holding the position. !n the American league Boston went into first place last Sunday and by win-hig win-hig all five of its sanies during the week reinforced its position. New York y was able to win only one out of four games and slipped back to third place, while Chicago, which won three out of lour, went into runner-up position. The Philadelphia Nationals lost only one game during the week, and that to Cincinnati. Moran's club batted hard and the pitchers were working well. While Philadelphia was beating Chicago Chi-cago Monday and Tuesday, the best New York could do was to divide two games with Pittsburg. Brooklyn and St. Lou is braced last wpek, the champions winninr four out of five games. The American league clubs were troubled trou-bled by adverse weather conditions. Winning the final game of the series from Chicago Sunday, the champions were idle - until Wednesday, when thpy began a four-game series at St. Louis. Barry's men took all four games from the Browns. Except for their defeat by Boston Sunday, Sun-day, Chicago won all its games and re- j tained second place, while New York was losing one game to Detroit and two out of three to Cleveland. The Indians kept up their previous steady progress. Philadelphia Phila-delphia and Detroit played better than St. Louis and Washington and managed to break even on the games played during dur-ing the week. |
