Show RECESS POSSIBLE. ' The senate finance committee unanimously unani-mously approved the huge war credits bill, and it is said the passage of the measure will not long be delayed. On the house side, of the capitol building an optimistic feeling prevails regarding regard-ing the revenue bill, and an early agreement agree-ment in conference is confidently expected ex-pected by the leaders on both sides. These favorable developments give rise to the belief that congress will be able to adjourn in the course of the next ten days or two weeks. In such case the senators and representatives will have a vacation of a couple of months at least before being called upon to consider more war legislation. Of course, it would have been possible for congress to have accomplished much more work than it will have to its credit by the 22nd of the present month, which is the date spoken of for adjournment. But as long as a handful of senators are allowed to obstruct legislation there will always be interminable delays and perhaps the country is lucky that there is a prospect that the vitally important measures will get through. The modified modi-fied cloture rule has helped some, but even now a majority of the senators is not sufficient to obtain a vote, which is a curious state of affairs in a republic repub-lic where the majority is supposed to rule. |
