Show BISBEE'S GATES ARE CLOSED TO THE JJ. W.'S 34 Deported Men Return to the Mining Camp From Columbus, but Are Arrested. FIVE PERMITTED TO SEE FAMILIES 15 Undesirables Thrown Off Train at Hachita, N. M. ; Sheriff Ready to Uphold the Law. BISBEE, riz-, Sept. 13. Thirty-four alleged members of the Industrial Workers Work-ers of the World and sympathizers with that body from the camp at Columbus, N. M.. where they had been since their deportation with more than 1100 others July 12 last, got off a passenger train at Osborn, junction point for this city, this morning and were met by Sheriff Wheeler Wheel-er and a party of deputies. All were taken before a police judge here to face charges of vagrancy. Warrants against some of them for disturbing the peace and for Intimidation of peaceful citizens were served by the sheriff. Of the thirty-five, five were married men. They were permitted to see their families. One of the men owns property here; six were subject to the selective draft and the remainder were unclassified. unclassi-fied. The married men denied affiliation with the I. W. W. Sheriff Wheeler took personal charge of the drafted men. Most of the unclassified unclassi-fied men said they did not want to remain re-main In Blsbee, but came only to get personal belongings. Many of them are not 'citizens of the United States. Asked whether he was a citizen, one of the men said: "No. I'm an I. W. W." Tw'elve others from Columbus are laeld by officers at Douglas, local officers are advised, and will be brought here to face the local police court. Pending their appearance before the court, deputies took the men to the ball park, where they were held prior to their deportation. , "She looks natural. Bill," said one of the men. "Don't talk to me!" Bill said. A number of citizens from Bisbee went j to Osborn to see the men arrive, but did not participate in their arrest. One of the returning exiles cursed the American government. Sheriff Wheeler admonished all the men against this. "I deported you men myself, in the name of Cochise county," he said, "and for the good of the country. It is me you ! want to talk to and about; not this gov- j ernment. If you say another word I will 1 arrest you on a treason charge instead of ! for vagrancy. This is not a time wfren j any man can speak of the United States I government except in terms of respeet or j loyalty." It is expected here that other -exiles i from Columbus will return here. They will be handled by the sheriff in the same way that today's party was, 'he said. |
