Show REINFORCE ORDER TO 510P LIQUOR SALES Saloon Men Get Added Warning Not to Serve Uncle Sam's Soldiers. Formal written notices emphasizing the iTerbal order issued Thursday night to restaurants, cabarets, saloons and liquor dealers, forbidding them to serve intoxicating liquors to members of the United States military forces while in uniform, were sent out vesterdav by Chief of Police J. Parley White. 'hile it is known that officers have been served in many of the leading hotel bars and cafes, no violations have been reported directly to the police. " Saloon keepers generally are in fact pleased with the prohibition against serving liquors to military men," said the chief of police last night. "I have received only three or four protests, and these have come from saloons of the lower tvpe. According to dispatches from Washington Wash-ington last night the department of justice jus-tice has been besieged with many inquiries in-quiries from district attorneys concerning concern-ing the enforcement of the law. Xo specific instructions have been sent out by the department, the officials at Washington Wash-ington deeming that the language of the act is sufficiently specific to enable en-able district attornevs and marshals to interpret it and enforce its provisions without direct instructions. It is stated that the department of justice expects that a broad construction will be placed on the law and that the term "military" "mili-tary" will be taken to include officers and enlisted men in the navy and marine ma-rine corps. Last night the downtown streets were crowded with soldiers and men in uniform, but few of them entered saloons. sa-loons. When they did. in most instances in-stances they were politely informed that they could not be served. It has been reported that many civilians civil-ians are taking compassion on the liquor deprived military men and are taking them into their homes and giving thcra drinks, or buying it for them in package pack-age form. While this is in direct violation vio-lation of the army act prohibition clause, no complaints have ben registered regis-tered at either the United States' attorney's at-torney's office or with the chief of police. |
