Februarv 25, a day of repentajice and prayer, to supplicate. God to avert war by the Vnited States, was issued today bv the executive committee of the Association of German-American Pastors. Pas-tors. "The guilt of America for the prolongation prolonga-tion of this slaughter of human beings and the wanton destruction of property bv- furnishing all kinds of weapons of destruction in immense quantities cannot he denied." says the call. "While this trade in munitions of war may be permissible per-missible according to international law. it is a crime against .humanity, and America's guilt is crying to heaven. Up to this time our nation has kept out of the war. But owing to' serious differences differ-ences between our government and the government of one of the belligerents a campaign of agitation and deliberate incitement in-citement has set in to draw us also into the vortex of horror and bloodshed. "But our people do not want war. Our government does not want war. Our national na-tional honor is not at stake. Only hirelings hire-lings of a foreign nation and people with an insatiable desire for blood-soaked money cry for war." The praver programme suggested by the call is: "First, to repent for America's Amer-ica's share in the blood-guiltiness of war; and secondly, to call upon God in earnest ear-nest supplication to hinder and restroy all evil counsel and base machinations which are at work to plunge our nation Into the European world war; and that be graciously endow our government and our president with wisdom and a firm determination to lead our nation through these perilous days and to preserve to our people the blessings of peace." |
