Hardy Downing has decided to switch the style of entertainment for his Monday Mon-day evening fights at the Manhattan club. Since the reopening of the club he has been having a couple of classy six-round six-round bouts, featuring at least two out-of-town battlers. Next Monday night he will put on four six-round battles and one four-tilt affair. The first six-gong battle will be between be-tween Gus Williams, the local featherweight feather-weight phenom, and Glen Gutke, former featherweight champion of Utah, and the boy who has given Young Azevedo his toughest scrap of the winter. This should be a hummer, as both boys are whirlwind whirl-wind fighters who tear in all the time. Gutke has been battling here for two or three years, and has been one of the best boys the Manhattan cluh produced. This winter he made but one appearance, that when he fought Azevedo. He lost by a decision. Williams won from Frankle Sanders of New York last Monday. He is rapidly developing into a classy featherweight. Kid Dutch, a hard-slugging lightweight, will go six rounds with Battling Johnson, a capable youth from southern Utah. These two boys have pounded each other in the four-round brawls, but have never yet gone over the longer route. Jess Oren, one of the classy lightweights light-weights of the Manhattan club, will go six rounds witli his old Ogden rival. Buss Boyle. ThlB fight should be of unusual interest to fans who have seen- the two mix things before. Both are hard-slamming fighters. Oren has not fought much this season, but he wants to get back into the game after a hard winter at the mines. He is huskier than ever and believes lie will make short work of Boyle this time. Bobby Moore, one of the most willing boys battling with the Manhattan string this winter, will tackle Yankee Allen In a six-round affair. Both these boys have had long experience in the slam-and-bang battles and should be able to make things merry. The only four-round bout of the evening even-ing will be the first preliminary between Willi Gee of Denver and Jack Dovle. the fast little scrapper who put Kid Holt to sleep last Monday. Doyle came here from the coast short while ago and Is displaying dis-playing lots of class. He should give Gee a hard - battle. |
