Show PARTY LEADERS DO I NOT SEE W. C. FITTS Department of Justic Attorney Attor-ney Shrouds Visit Here With Mystery. I -t The presence of William C. Fills of Washington, D. C. assistant United States attorney general, in Salt Lake has given rise to reports that Mr. Fitts is in the city as representative of the department depart-ment of justice to Inquire Into the qualifications quali-fications of attorneys eligible to appointment appoint-ment as Judge of the United StateB district dis-trict court Tor Utah. Mr. Fitts. while in the city, conferred with United States District Attorney W. W. Ray. but did not meet with Democratic Demo-cratic party leaders or with attorneys mentioned, as likely candidates for the judgeship, which might be taken to indicate indi-cate that his business was solely in the direction of administering the affairs of the department of Justice and without political significance. Both Mr. Fitts and Mr. Raj- declined to discuss the purpose of Mr. FKts's business. In Washington officials of the department depart-ment of Justice declined to comment on the object of the visit of Mr. Fitts to Salt l.ake. He has been in the west and the southwest for some weeks on anti-trust cases and on other business of the department. depart-ment. However, it is believed that there is nothing In connection with the cases on which he lias been working' that would make it necessary for him to stop in Salt kakt. While Mr. Fitts is a close friend of the attorney general and one of the able men of the department. If Is believed In Washington Wash-ington that were an Investigation of the qualifications of candidates for the federal fed-eral bench de'slred by the attorney general he would either make a personal Investigation Investi-gation or assign Assistant Attqrney General Gen-eral Graham to make such an inquiry. Mr. Graham has usually been the man selected to look into local sltua lions respecting re-specting federal appointments under the department of justice. The latest candidate for appointment to the federal bench in Utah is Elmer IS. Corf man of Provo, who yesterday received re-ceived the unanimous indorsement of the attorneys of Provo. Mr. Corf man 's a prominent attorney apd an active Democrat. Demo-crat. The following telegram, signed by every member of trie bar in Provo, was sent yesterday to President Wilson: We, the undersigned, members of the bar of Provo City, Utah, hereby respectfully present the name of Elmer El-mer E.
