KulenkampfC, member of the Importing Import-ing house of Wessels, Kulenkampff & Co. of New York, spent less than an hour before a federal grand Jury here today to explain the connection of his firm with the alleged distribution of nearly $800,000 of the money of the imperial German government In this country. The witness. It was Mid, admitted to his qutzzers that his house had sent west to the credit of the San Francisco German consulate $350,000 within several months subsequent subse-quent to the beginning of the war last year. Mr. Kulenkampff came to San Francisco in answer to a subpoena issued at the request of John W. Preston, United States attorney here. He left Immediately Immedi-ately for New York after his release j from the grand jury room. The details of his testimony on the I alleged distribution of the immense fundi of German money, which federal officials here assert was supplied from Berlin for unneutral projects, were held secret. Several large sums, supposedly part of this lund. were alleged to have been used In outfitting the steamer Sacramelo, which furnished supplies to the German fleet off Valparaiso. Chile, last year, and in purchasing a cargo for the steamer Olsen and Mahoney, which was held up in this port nearly a year ago and finally unloaded. A deposit of $120,000 In currency, it is alleged, was made In a San Francisco bank some time ago by German agents. The grand jury la seeking to trace this money. Indictments were returned some time ago against Individuals and firms interested inter-ested in the voyage of the Sacramento. The cases are pending. |
