Show RETREAT IS NOT ACKNOWLEDGED BY THE GERMANS By International News Service. NEW YORK, Sept. 14. Count von Bernstorff. the German embassador, de-1 de-1 clined today to comment on the news from London and Paris of the continued retreat of the German troops In France. "I have a copy of a news dispatch by wireless from Germany, via Sayvillc," he said, "which does not call the German movement a retreat. It is as follows: " The German crown prince has captured cap-tured the enemy's fortified position southwest south-west of Verdun and is now- bombarding with heavy artillery the outer fort3 lying to the south. " 'A battle is in progress between Paris and the river Marne over a front of 125 kilometers, stretching from Nanteuil in the west, -where tlie English forces are, to Vitry. The crown prince's army is separated from the main batUe by the forest of Argonne. " 'The armies of the crown prince of Bavaria and General von Herringen are in formal battle near the upper Moselle. " 'General Hindenberg has defeated the Russians, has crossed the Russian frontier, fron-tier, and up to the present time has taken 10,000 prisoners and captured eighty guns and aeroplanes.' " Another wireless message which the German embassador made public read: "The retreat of the Russian army from east Prussia appears to be developing into' flight and demoralization. General Hindenberg Hin-denberg reports capturing 150 guns and JO. 0U0 to 3,000 prisoners." |
