Show DULL POLITICAL YEAR. Politics appears to be at low ebb iu the United States just now. Campaigns are in progress in the various states, but very little is said concerning them. Maine voted yesterday, but since the eruption of Eoosevelt in the Pine Tree state, not a wofd has come over the wires regarding the election, which is usually regarded as the political straw showing- the direction of the political wind. Politicians of high and Iotv degree, of large and sniail calibre, may be whooping it up on the hustings and endeavoring to .stir up a little local excitement, bnt their stump platitudes, gyrations and gesticulations are lost upon the people of the country at large, for the wires are burdened with war news, and campaign orators who might be worth half a stick' of type under ordinary circumstances now fail to pet a line, and the real political top-notchers top-notchers do not fare much better. But tho war in Europe is not the only reason for dearth of political news. Congress is still in session and the statesmen, both real and imiginary, of all three parties are in Washington, where political flapdoodle such as can be sprung upon the folks at home (bless their faithful hearts'.) is more likely to bring forth ridicule than to accomplish ac-complish any political good. In addition there seems to bo a general lack of interest on the part of the voters, who no longer believe everything a senator tells them. In consequence they arc not fired with zeal for the party ticket j and fail to become enthusiastic in support sup-port of individual candidates, who prata of the public good but thrust themselves forward year after year. All indications point to a tame campaign. |
