Show "BARREL STAVE" WHISKY. With an eye to the main chance some fellow discovered that whisky could be extracted from the staves of barrels in which such liquor had aged, and "barrel stave" whisky was soon placed upon the market, but not under that name, be it understood. This brand of whisky did not contribute to the support of the government in the shape of internal revenue taxes. The collector at Chicago ruled that the manufacturers manufactur-ers would havo to prove that a tax had been paid or pay it the second time, and Judge Landis, having adopted this view, the manufacturers of "barrel stave" whisky will be compelled to go out of business, and those who have acquired a taste for this 'particular brand of wet goods will have to find a substitute, wood alcohol being equally sure to kill and much quicker. |
