J., July IS. After a weary week of enforced idleness caused by fog and the vagaries of the weather, tre e;;p candidates today final- pulled off the first race they have saiied since last Monday and, as if to reward the yachtsmen for their long wait, Resolute and Vanitie sailed a heck and neck race, finishing only a second apart over a twenty-eight-mile course. As usual, the. Resolute won again, but for the third time since they began racing the '"Vanitie . made the fastest time over the course, only to lose the race on time allowance. The Vanitie actually beat the Besolute by 46 seconds, sec-onds, but, thanks to an allowance of 1 , inute 39 seconds, the Herreshoff boat f an by 53 seconds corrected time and also defeated the Defiance by 1 minute, min-ute, 56 seconds. Finish Is Close. In other words, less than three minutes min-utes separated the two yachts at the finish, which, by the way, is also the first time the three yachts have finished fin-ished on such even terms since they began racing. , The race was sailed twice around the fourteen-mile windward and leeward course from Brenton 's Beef lightship to Point Judith whistling buoy and return re-turn and included fourteen miles of windward work and with four miles of running. Except for a little fresh puff right after the start, the wind at no -time -exceeded about eleven miles an hour. Resolute in Thin Air. In the long rolling sea the Resolute showed at tee best in windward work, bur on the second round, whew siio bad the race well in hand, she ran into a sofr spot under Narragansett pier, which enabled her rivals to pick up what thev had lost. As a re.-ult, the Vanitie wa almost on even terms with the' Besolute when tho pair started on the seven-mile run down the wind for the home mark. Inch bv luch the Vanitie picked up ' on the Resolute in the run to the finish, but the Herreshoff boat managed to cross the bnish line just, one second ahead and won out on time allowance. |
