Show WILLIAMS WINS LEG ON ACHELES TROPHY By J. S. MITCHELL. By International News Service. SEA BRIGHT, N. .1., July 19. In the challenge round for the Acheles cup at the Sea Bright lawn tennis tournament today, Richard N orris Williams, the challenger, chal-lenger, defeated Theodore R. Pell, the holder, by the score of 6-4. 4-6, fi-3, 6-3. Pell had two legs tallied for the cup and It was hard for him to miss another an-other and lose its permanent ownership. As it was. Pell never played a better game In his life, and the fact that the match went to five sets is evidence that he made Williams work for every ace he scored. There was a large gallery present. Williams won the first set. but the crowd could ha rdly believe t heir e eIgnt when Pell ripped out the next two and the holder was in Lhe lead at the intermission intermis-sion by i wo sets to one. Then Williams began to play careful tennis a nd he crept to the net for his characteristic kills. He made a . series of bea ti t If nl angle shots to the corners which brought forth the admiration nf the sharps present. The fact that Williams Wil-liams won the last two sets with exactly exact-ly the sa me score meant that when it was necessary the young internationalist was equal to the task. The win gives Williams his first teg on the cup. |
