Columbia Colum-bia university won the triangular ciht-oared ciht-oared shell race on Carnegie lake today, to-day, fiiiiwhirifr a "length ami about two feet ahead of Princeton. The University Uni-versity of Pennsylvania eight finished third, three lengths behind the Tigers. Columbia's time, iviis 0 minutes 16 seconds. sec-onds. Prinenton 's time was 9:0 4 5, and Pennsylvania's 9:oi2. The record for the course is 9:0T, held by Cornell. The Now York crew rowed a consistent con-sistent race from start to finish. Taking Tak-ing the lead with tho first dip of their oars, the Columbia men rowed a steadv stroke arfd slowly increased their leaii as Princeton and Pennsylvania were fighting it out for second place. Columbia Co-lumbia never seemed to be in trouble, and when it crossed the finish line appeared ap-peared to have a lot of strength in reserve. Princeton rowed a eame- race. Getting Get-ting away last at the start the Tigers held Pennsylvania and when the mile mark was passed, had gone into second place with Pennsylvania rapidly falling liehiud. There was as much cheering for the Princeton team at the finish as there was for the winner. The distance of the race was one mile 1440 yards. The three crews got away, rowing from 40 to 44 strokes a minute with Columbia slightlv leading. At the quarter mile Columbia held her advantage .w-ith Pennsylvania a quarter of a length in front of Prinre-tuu. Prinre-tuu. Ail three were then rowing thirty-four. thirty-four. At this point Pennsylvania began to drop behind noticeably. The crew seemed to tire and was practically out of the race. Columbia, rowing thirty-four thirty-four to the minute, steadily held her lead though Princeton, hitting up the pace to r.hirty-six strokes, made .a mighty effort to catch the Morningside crew. Columbia, however, had sufficient suffi-cient reserve strength to hold the advantage ad-vantage and crossed the finish line with the men rowing without any great effort. The Pennsylvanians kept falling behi ml and Princeton finished three full lengths ahead of the Quakers. |
