Walter C, Whiffen, correspondent of the Associated Asso-ciated Press; 0. Sutton, a .photographer for tho Washington Post; Oliver M. Hueffer, a correspondent of the London Lon-don Express, and another English correspondent cor-respondent named Sourke, tverc arrested ar-rested by the Mexican authorities at Mexico City on Thursday evening. They had just arrived from Vera Cruz and the police were waiting with coaches when the train drew into the station. k They were taken to the jail uuder guard and Whiffen and Sutton were held for investigation. The two'Kng-lishmen two'Kng-lishmen were released and the officer who arrested them was reprimanded. Whiffen carried only a handbag, which happened to contain a cony of the Mexican Herald. The official who searched the bag remarked: "That kind of English aoesn 't go here." Sutton carried a camera, which was confiscated. He showed a correspond- ent's credentials signed by Rear Admiral Ad-miral Badger, but this had no effect. Hueffer went at once to the Iirazil-ian Iirazil-ian minister, who notified the British minister, Sir Lionel Carden, and also called on the police to release the Americans. The police replied that some action would be taken as soon as the chief of police had investigated the merits of the case. Rourke, the other English correspondent, corres-pondent, returned while Hueffer remained re-mained in Mexico City. The British consul here has received no advices and the Brazilian consulate is closed. Word reached New York City on Saturday night that Walter 0. Whiffen of the Associated Press staff, who was arrested at Mexico City, has been released re-leased by the Mexican authorities. |
