Show RHINE RIVER MAY BE GIVEN GERMAN MOUTH Officials of Western -roviiices of Prussia Are Favorable to the" Gigantic Improvement. Special Cable to The Tribune. BKKLIN, May 9. It is stated that the chief administrative officials of the western provinces of Prussia have reported favorably on the idea of providing pro-viding the Rhine with a "German mouth." In . particular, the' chief president of Hanover anticipates groat benefits for the province from the execution of the project. The government departments concerned con-cerned are now to bo entrusted with ! tho detailed examination of tlie various plans that have been put forward. In all of these tlie Kins estuary is taken as the point where the new mouth will open on the sea, but there is a great difference of opinion as to where the Rhine should be tapped. One engineer has solemnly proposed that the new waterway should be deep enough to accommodate steamers of the largest size, but this ambitious scheme wil 1 almost certainly be prevented pre-vented from realization by the enormous cost involved. A much more modest plau, which provides for less than fifteen feet of water, is expected to cost not less than $125,000,000. The whole idea of a German Rhine mouth has been much discussed, and is backed by so much patriotic sentiment that it will probably be realized, even if its economic aspect should be rather doubtful. |
