Show lOAK SECOND S ACKER IS SPEEDY PLAYER OAKLAND, Feb. 7. -According to advices ad-vices from Birmingham, Ala., where he has played for the last five seasons, IA Marcan. the second baseman secured by Oakland, is a high class player. Birmingham Birming-ham was not particular! y willing to let him go, but the new salary limit imposed on the Southern association made it necessary nec-essary to cut Marcan's salary and he was granted the privilege of making a better deal for himself if he could. Oakland's offer suited Marcan and be accepted. He leaves Birmingham with the regrets of the club owners and the fans. Marcan is' described as a player who is always In condition and Eeldoin misses a game. He is not a heavy hitter, bis mark last year being .260, but in the field he led the second basemen of, his league in 193 4, and during his stay in the south has always been close to the first position posi-tion among the second Backers. Marcan is a hard man to pitch to, having hav-ing the happy faculty of waiting them out. He scored 103 runs last season, the largest number of any player In the league stole thirty-nine bases and made thirty-one sacrifice hits. |
