Show WILL 6. FARRELL LECTK TO B8IS Tells Them They Neglect Opportunity by Not Obtaining Ob-taining Utah Lands. Will G. Farrell, former secretary of the Salt Lake Commercial club, addressed a large audience In the Murray First ward meeting house last night on "Utah's Waste Lands." Mr. Farrell pointed out In his address the many advantages that tho boys of Utah have been neglecting. Opportunity after opportunity, he said, appears every day to the boys of Utah. The boys, on the other hand, he added, have been ne&leptinj? their advantages and men from other parts of the United States and foreign landa have realized these prospects and have taKen advantage of them. , Ono real estate company was said by Mr. Farrell to have sold 1 50.000 acres of land in one region to outsiders, within a comparatively short time. According to a statement that followed, this ia only a small portion of the land that haa fallen Into the hands of outside men tnat ornierlv belonged to Umh'8 pioneers. Mr. Farrell placed the blame principally on the boys who are not willing to do their duty on the farm. He said that man.v of the Utah farm boys wanted the high" collar and white shirt in preference to the kind of shirt worn by their fathers. Mr. Farrell said In part: The lands of Utah are only partly under cultivation. Many of the lands that were once the prize weed patches of the community pro now the. pride of the neighborhood. However, these places have not bfen cultivated by the sons of Utah. In nearly ever;- case the new farms have bn worked under un-der forelpnerf. The farmer hoy. invariably, in-variably, works for thefe foreigners at a small scale rather than be Independent. Inde-pendent. They do not seem to be willing to take the responsibility of handling the lands. Thir chief ambition is to appear ap-pear In high society and their work is neglected. In many cases thc trouble I lies In the bringing up of the boy and I his college education. The boy goes to the grade schools, high schools and I then to college. When he gets through college he wants to take the "old man's" place at the desk and run tho business. Then is the time when ho first meets with disappointment and goes out for himself, and in many cases ends up with the pick and shovel. |
