Show IOWA LEADS. Texas has lost the title of bauuer crop state, the honors going to Iowa. The thir teen principal crops grown in the Hawk-eye Hawk-eye stato last year are valued at $3ol,-450,000, $3ol,-450,000, a record which puts to shame-many shame-many whole countries bf the world. Uliuois also forged ahead of the Lone Star state with crops worth $319,656,000. Kausas is fourth in lino and Nebraska fifth. Whilo Texas is an empire within itself, millions of acres of land are devoted de-voted to ranching purposes, w-hilo Iowa is cut up into farms of moderate size. It is probable that the soil of Iowa is richer than that of Texas and that it is better cultivated. One potent reason Texas lags behind in the race, however, is the fact that there has been little or no market for cotton, one of her principal crops. Iowa, being the banner corn producing state, also had the advantage of abnormally ab-normally high prices for that cereal. And the same is true of Illinois, Kansas Kan-sas and Nebraska. If there is any market for cotton Texas may again forge -to the front this year. |
