Show CORRUPTION ALLEGED. Evidently the election of United States senators by direct vote of the people does not result in the togas so bo-stowed bo-stowed being free from stain. At least, there is something more than a suspicion suspi-cion to that effect. Senator Norris of Nebraska recently introduced a resolution res-olution calling for an investigation of the senatorial campaigns in Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania and Illinois for the purpose, it is alleged, of showing that vast sums of money were used in behalf of Boies Penrose and Roger Sullivan, the one a Bepublican and the other a Democrat, the former elected and the latter de-leated. de-leated. The scope of the resolution was broadened broad-ened at the instance of the Republican members of the privileges aud elections committee before adoption. The probe will be instituted in all the states where charges of corruption have been made and some scandal will probably develop. It is very doubtful, however, if any real good will be accomplished by the inquiry, or any senator's toga snatched from his shoulders as a result. Ingalh was not mistaken as to the purity of politics. |
