Show FIERCE FIGHTS RAGE ALONG THE RUSSIAN LUES Purpose of Germans Ap-pears Ap-pears to Be to Break Through East of Lemberg. TROOPS WITHDRAWN FROM BZURA RIVER Emperors Are With Armies Awaiting Outcome of One of the Most Stubborn Contests of War. PETKOGHAD, Feb. 7, via London, 4:45 p. m. The stubborn character of the battles developing in the extreme north of East Prussia is attracting the attention of the Russian general staff, which sees there indications that the Germans have withdrawn troops from the Bzura region and massed them in the vicinity of Insterburg, between Gumbinnen and Tilsit. In spite of the activity of the Germans Ger-mans further north, staff officials still attach the greatest importance to the movement in the Carpathians, where the Russian armies arc opposing the Austro-Germaus, who are in tremendous force on a line which forms the arc of a circle in the vicinity of Mezo La-borcz, La-borcz, fifty miles southwest of Przemysl. Further eastward there appears ap-pears to be an entire separate army about ninety miles south of Lemberg on the Wyzckow-Nadworna Hue (Austria-Hungary). The purpose of the lat-er lat-er force appears to be an effort to pierce the Russian line east of Lemberg and meuace tho forces about Warsaw in the rear. EMPERORS ARE EYEWITNESSES ON EAST FRONT LONDON, Feb. 7, 10:40 p. ni. With the German and Eussiau emperors as eyewitnesses, the armies of Russia and Germany are still contending for the position which protects tbe Polish capital cap-ital from the invaders. The Russian emperor has been at Russian headquarters headquar-ters for several days, and the German report says that the German emperor has joined his generals and has actually visited some of the troops in their trenches. Nothing has been disclosed as to the iirogress of the battle, which, when the last reports were ir.-rived, was raging with UDabated fur t"he Russians, according' ac-cording' to Satiii'.i.s d official statement, state-ment, had strengthened their positions on the western bank of the Bzura river, which they had erosseu near its mouth, and captured a long line of German trenches near Borjimow, which has been the center of most desperate fighting. In East Prussia another big battle is developing, the Germans having sent reinforcements, apparently from their Bzura frout, to that region. In the Carpathians, while their right is advancing, ad-vancing, the Russians are only able to report that their left has checked the Austro-German offensive. With regard to all this fighting, the German official report simply says: ( No essential events have taken place.5 ' RUSSIAN ARMY IS TURNED BACK IN CARPATHIANS PETROGRAD, Feb. 7.
