Show SCANDAL FOLLOWS ELECTIOIOF HOLLIS Defeated Candidate for Senator Sena-tor Charges Attempt to - Sell Votes. CONCOTtD, March 17. Gordon Woodbury, Wood-bury, who was a candidate for United States senator in tho contest that ended, last Thursda with the choice of Henry F. Ilollis, charged before a legislative legis-lative investigating committee today that a member ot the legislature had offered to sell his vote and deliver three other votes for $1000. Two othor witnesses wit-nesses testified that they had been improperly im-properly approached in tho prolonged balloting. Woodbury was an anti-llollis Democrat Demo-crat and tho support he received prevented pre-vented for a time the election of Ilollis. Ilol-lis. He testified that a representative, whom he named, called at his office and said that if Mr. Woodbury would produce tho money he could have four votes then being cast against him. The witness said that he replied that ho was not interested and showed the man the door. William D. Young, a business associate asso-ciate of Woodbury, told the committee that the man mentioned by his partner had said that ho and two others would vote for Woodbury for $200 each. Itepresentative John S. Wheeler of Manchester testified that the alleged briber mot him on a railroad train and. exhibiting a largo roll of bills, offered1 to put tho witness in tho way of making mak-ing $S00 or $900 at the legislature. The committee adjourned tonight for a week. |
