A number num-ber of priests from All Hallows college and the surrounding parishes were also In attendance. The community of Sisters at the academy acade-my was augmented by as many as could come from tho other mission houses In Utah, so that IL was one of tho largest processions of religious orders ever seen away from the mother house that gathered gath-ered In St. Mary's chapel to accompany the sister's remains to the last resting place. A large number of friends, among whom were many of St, Mary's alumni and other pupils of former years were likewise present either In loving honor for the deceased whom they may have known, or in sympathy with her surviving surviv-ing sisters. After the chanting of the "Libera" and the funeral rites, the Rt. Rev. Bishop Scanlan preached a short but Impressive sermon, the burden of which was that such an occasion as this was one for rejoicing rather than sorrowing, the winning win-ning Of 'the crown by one whose Hfo had been marked by sacrifice and the practice prac-tice of such high virtues as the religious Ufa entails, and of which he had been specifically assured Sister Oswald had given proof being matter for congratulation congratu-lation not only to the happy soul thus favored, but to the community that had to mourn her loss. It would seem. Indeed, In-deed, that her race had been comparatively compara-tively short, she hnd been a professed member of ihc community only ten years, while there are many surviving her In the ranks who have labored many timeB that period, and who have- yet many trials to bear before they reach the end she has so briefly and fortunately attained. at-tained. The bishop's words -were as usual not only full of hope and spiritual unction, but also of thoroughly practical .Import to the hearers. The management of tho funeral was under the efficient direction of Mr. Douche of the O'Donnell firm, and tho pallbearers were Knights of Columbus, Messrs. A Bruneau, J. B. McEnany, P, J. O'Carroll, R. Canning, R. A. Kane and D. J. Laramie. Besides the carriages occupied by the clergy and the sisters, there were in the line several more for the graduates and undergraduates, while many of the pupils wont to the cemetery by car. The requiem mass for the repose of Sister Oswald's soul was celebrated Saturday Sat-urday morning by the Rev. W, K. Ryan, the community, the pupils and a large number of friends being present. The remains were placed before the altar on this occasion, after which they reposed in the chapter room until the hour set for the funeral, during which Interval the sisters were detailed In small groups to watch and pray, the office of the dead being among the prescribed, devotions. There were many who camo to view the remains, and all were Impressed with l the sweet and holy atmosphere of the j scene, the crucifix, the lighted tapers, the body clothed in the religious garb with the perpetual vows as written by the slster'a own hand and subscribed by by her at the moment of her religious profession In the order, resting sweetly on her breast. It was a sight somewhat rare and not soon to be forgotten. The alumni will have a. mass said for tho sister at the. academy altar some day during the week, probably Saturday Satur-day morning. |
