Show DEAD UMBER LESS TNI1DJUBED Earthquake in Mexico Not Nearly So Destructive as at First Reported. MEXICO CITY, June 11. With the ex ception of the capital', Zapotlan, Jalisco, is the town which suffered most severely as the result of the earthquake of last Wednesday. Reports received today and based on official advices place the number num-ber of dead there at -forty-three. Three times that number were injured. The number of buildings destroyed Is placed at 119, though more than 1000 were damaged, including a number of churches. A few of these were so badly damaged that they were closed. A great majority of the buildings affected were of little value. In Guadalajara no casualties wore reported. re-ported. With the exception of three churches and a theater, which shows cracks, the property loss was insignificant. insig-nificant. At Zamora, the town where the cathedral cathe-dral tower was said to have fallen and Killed scores of worshipers, no casualties occurred. A cross on the cathedral, however, how-ever, fell and broke through the roof. El Calvary and La Parlslma are names of two churches slightly damaged. No other buildings were injured. In Collma. notwithstanding one-third of the houses were slightly damaged, the number of death,s Is placed at three. The state palace was one of the buildings damaged, but slightly. Three churches were so badly cracked that they have been temporarily closed. Sayula is a town where the early reports re-ports indicated forty had been killed. Authentic reports now show none was killed, Allowing for later reports which may extend tho death lists somewhat, especially espe-cially from the villages of Tonalab and San Andres, It now appears certain that the total number of dead In the republic as the result of the earthquake will bo considerably less than 200. The known dead are less than 125. |
