Show SOUTHERN NEVADA 1AI J1DUCE OIL Drilling Apparatus to Prospect Likely Territory Shipped From Goldfield. NATURAL GAS FOUND AT INDIAN SPRINGS Surface Indications Point to Ample Supply of Oil at Depth. Special to The Tribune, GOLDFIELD. Nov.. March 12. Southern South-ern Nevada Is destined to take rank as a potential oil producing section In the near future If t he expenditure of largo sums of money In boring for th "brown gold- has that effect, as It almost Invariably In-variably hns had. An oil rig. with com-ploto com-ploto equipment for drilling to great depth, is being shipped this week from Goldlleld to the Indian Springs district, forty miles north of Las Vegas, by Manager Man-ager Ira MacFarland for the Pioneer Oil company or Nevada, who will begin be-gin drilling at once at a point four miles south of the Indian Springs ranch, which he has leased from the railroad compuny Tor a torm of years. Two other companies compa-nies have acquired land In tho same neighborhood and will begin operations shortly. . , As early as the year 1879 engineers In the employ of tho United States Gcolpg -cal Survey classlfieil this land in their reports nx oil land, but until after the completion of the Lns Vegas & Tonopali railroad, which passes through the center cen-ter of the tract, no attention was paid the district by oil men and only within tho past year has surface prospecting by exports resulted In Impressing upon them tho conviction thnt oil will be found here. Tho section Is widely removed from the quarts, mining districts, and Is entirely sedimentary In formation. The surface Indications arc pronounced to be highly favorable for a good quality of oil. with strong asphalt cropplngs forty feet wide In places and at other points the oil sand crops at the surface and Is heavily Impregnated with asphnltlne and paraf-flne. paraf-flne. the latter being particularly In evidence evi-dence and Indicating a better grade than the ordinary. Sonic Natural Gas. Natural gas Is encountered throughout this district and Is under such heavy pressuro that It Is Impossible to dig a thirty-foot well. The strata of sand and asphalt when broken give off a strong odor of petroleum and near the cropplngs are large quantities of fossil oyster, clam and other shecls. some of which arc partially par-tially imbedded In the soft, broken formation. forma-tion. In addition to tho possibilities of finding oil in this section the development develop-ment of Its agricultural resources will be an important feature. The tract owned by tho Pioneer company, embracing embrac-ing manv square miles, lies at the head of tho Vegas valley, and below It some fifteen or twenty artesian wells liave been bored. Not one of these has failed to get a strong flow of water, the best being 120 miner's Inches, and at depths varying from 200 to 300 feet. Intorest In the reclamation of desert laud bv means of artesian wells has resulted re-sulted "in over 300.000 acres of land having hav-ing been located under the Carey act In Vegas and Pahrump valleys alono during dur-ing tho past few months, and the locators, loca-tors, coming from all parts of Nevuda and southern California, arc In the great majorltv of cases assured of an ample wator s'upply from comparatively shallow wells to Irrigate tholr land. It Is est -. mated that the Pioneer company s terrl-torv terrl-torv embraces at least 10.000 acres of land which con, readily be Irrigated The soil Is deep and rich and the climate mild. On tho small ranch leased as a baso of operations for the oil company Is an orchard of about two acres yielding yield-ing unusually heavy crops of apples, peaches, pears, prunes, plums aiul figs. About ono-half this area last year yielded ten tons of appjes of excellent quality. San Francisco Mining Stocks. SAN FRANCISCO. March 12.
