Show RELAY FROM NEW YORK TO CHICAGO NEW YORK. July 15. As a pistol shot rang out on the city hall steps at 10 o'clock today, a llttlo alhlcto In running tights, carrying a silver tube containing a message from Mayor McClellan to Mavor Bussc of Chicago, darted away up Broadway Broad-way on the llrst relay of a thousand-mile Journey to Chlcugo. Herbert II. Rapp was the runner. Mayor McClcllan's message was as follows. "To the City of Chicago: The Citv of New York sends greetings by the "fleet runners of the Young Men's Christian association. as-sociation. This message Is borne on foot without a halt from the Atlantic to Lako Michigan, and the hundreds of boys who carry It gain no prize except the consciousness con-sciousness of having done their best " According to the schedule tho message will reach Chicago July 21. Two thousand boys will take part in the race. Each runner run-ner will carry the message half a mile. Perhaps the most spectacular feature will be tho swimming of Lake Cayuga by the boys of Auburn, N. Y., department. |
