Show THE CASE OF CUTLER. It is brought forward as a matter of great significance and against Tho Tribune by tho Smoot "Mouth," that wo havo supposed right along that Gov-vernor Gov-vernor Cutler would bo tho church candidate can-didate to succeed himself. That he hns now withdrawn as a candidato is urged by tho "Mouth" as conclusive against that position. It says, speaking of the proposed church candidacy of Governor Gover-nor Cutler, that "if that had been the arrangement, Governor Cutler would not havo retired from the race." To which wo may quite as aptly reply that if it had not been tho arrangement, or at least havo been thought to be by him, Governor Cutler would not have announced an-nounced himself as a candidate. If, therefore, The Tribuno was mistaken mis-taken in assuming that Governor Cutler Cut-ler would be the church candidato to succeed himsolf, it is clenr Mint Governor Gover-nor Cutler was also mistaken on the same point. Undoubtedly Govcruor Cutler, when he announced his candidacy for reelection, supposed that ho had the backing of the church political bosses in so doing. As soon as he found out that ho did not have that backing, he promptly withdrew, or, rather, it would bo more accurate to say that he was promptly pulled off tho course by his church and political masters. Tho supposition that Governor Cutler was to have the church backing to sue coed himself must have been widespread, wide-spread, indeed, to have so improsscd itself upon that functionary himself him-self as to cause him to announce his candidacy. No one for a moment could believe that Governor Cutler would make &uch an announcement as that unless un-less ho supposed ho had the backing of tho church authorities. It appears, howover, thai; he did not have it, and ho was promptly pulled off the perch when he acted without it. This pulling men down, or disciplining them if they persist in staying up, has been a favorite fav-orite pastime of the church political despots ever siuco the time of Apostle Thatcher. We see instances of it all tho time as the years go by. Governor Gover-nor Cutler's disciplining in this respect is simply an item in tho long list. But it is a significant item just the same, and it is proof positive that the same old rule prevails, tho same old power is supreme. |
