Show , 1 NAVY DEPARTMENT AROUSED BY : DISCRIMINATION AGAINST MEN , NEW LONDON, Conn., July ". Acting- Secretary of tho Navy Newberry New-berry has written a letter to A. T. Miner, president of the Now London Business Men's association, in regard to tho recent refusal of the (Inuring privileges nt n local pavilion to men wearing tho uniform of tho United States navy. In the letter he sa'K: "It being apparent under tho exist; ing circumstances that enlisted men of the navy, although sober and well behaved, be-haved, aro being discriminated against by at least one part of the public entertainment en-tertainment at New London, it only remains for the navy department to . transfer those headquarters of tho, squadron to some port where tho men : will bo made welcome on their own nc- count, in spite of the fact that they i wear the honorable uniform of the serv- , ico of the United States navy, or where I they arc protected by the law troin : humiliation such as was experienced in the city. In view of your letter, however, how-ever, the department will defer action in the matter, awaiting some reply to I this letter which may enable tho, department de-partment to lake othoT than the indicated indi-cated action.'' |
