Miss Ferris, tho llrat speaker, gave a very able and interesting talk on the needs of Ihe mission work in Africa. 3ho took up tho thrco iihafes of the work that Is being carried on In that Held by tho foreign mission board of tho church, tho educational work, evangelistic and tho work of tho medical missionaries. Schools Aided by John Bull. Ml3S Ferris told of tho success that had been attained with tho co-oporatlon of tho British Government In securing uome thirteen thousand acres of land for the schools that havo been established there, and told of the groat need for fundH lo carry on tho work. Sho said that, contrary con-trary to tho prevailing opinion that living Is very cheap In Africa, that ono of the main obstacles to work thero Is because of the fact that the teachers and missionaries mission-aries havo to pay almost prohibitive prices for tholr living. Hold on the People. Tho speukcr stated that without doubt tho main hold of the missionaries on the people is obtained through tho medical missionaries, who, through their mlnls-ttrlng mlnls-ttrlng to tho needs of tho people In times of sickness, are able to gain a hold on their affections, and this once done they are nblo to Induce them to accept the advantages ad-vantages of the education that is being offered them In tho schools and tho first prlnclplo that Is being taught in tho schools is that of cleanliness. After success suc-cess is attained In the matter of cleanliness cleanli-ness thoy feel that the rest of tho work Is comparatively easy. To Gain Foothold in India. Mrs. Anncss also gave a very Interesting Interest-ing talk on tho work that Is being carried on by tho church In Africa, but devoted most of her attention to tho efforts that are being mado to gain a foothold In In-61a. In-61a. The speaker said that the command, "Go, ye, Into all the world and preach the gcspel to every creature," should be heeded now moro than eer before. She pointed to tho lives of Livingstone, Butler, But-ler, Scott nnd tho COO missionaries who have laid down their lives In the effort to 1 reach tho gospel to tho heathen as an example that should bo followed by those who profess to bo followers of the Christ. Need More Missionaries. Mrs. Anness stated that tho annual grant of the board of foreign missions is wholly Inadequate lo meet tho needs of the work. At tho present time there Is but one missionary to -15,000 people, and that there aro about 100.000 waiting to be baptised m the Christian religion at the present time. Tho collection which was taken Is to be sc nt to the board to help purchase buildings build-ings at Bangor, India. |
