WAS AMONG FJRST ON THAT DISCOVERY Returns With Numerous Very Fine Specimens of Free Gold Rock. Ono has only to behold some of the mngnlficcnt free-gold specimens that are brought from the mining properties of Manhattan, to fully credit the many articles that have boon written about that great camp. On Monday there arrived in Salt Lake one of the prospectors who was first upon the ground, and who accumulated ac-cumulated some excellent ground before tho great rush began several months ago. This gentleman is Robert Gordon, whose home Is In this city, but who went Into Nevada several years ago to trv his luck. Have Made Big- Sale. Air. Gordon arrived nt Manhattan when there were only a few tents there; that was last .June, and he and his associates located many claims several of which they allowed to slip from their lingers That they retained enough for the ordinary or-dinary mortal, however. Is shown in the recent sale by Mr. Gordon, Barnoy Judge, Frank Stevenson and Harry Stevenson, of three claims to prominent banking and mining men of Goldlleld and Tonopah. These threo claim: brought the owners a round sum of money, and In addition several sev-eral hundred shares of stock In the company com-pany that has been formed to develop the claims. These gentlemen still retain several claims which they Intend to develop, and Mr. Gordon will return to Manhattan within a fortnight for that purpose. Ho brought from his properties some of the finest gold oro ever brought from Manhattan, Man-hattan, showing frco gold In profuse quantities. The specimens are characteristic charac-teristic of the ore that this young but wonderful camp can produce. B;mnrkable Growth of Camp. Before Ihe rush, and after tho town had been surveyed. Mr. Gordon could have picked out his own number and character of town lots for his own price; now these lols are selling for thousands of dollars each, and the camp of tents Is fast giving way to buildings of two and three stories In height. Within three months tho camp has risen from a few scattered tents to a town of eight thousand thous-and people, and the buildings extend along the gulch for a distance of one and one-half miles.
