Show I ONE DECKHAND DROWNED ' Lake Steamer Burned, but Passengers Are All Ruscued. SHEBOYGAN, Wis., March 19. The Goodrich steamer Atlanta, which left this port for Milwaukee Sunday morning was burned to the water's edge 12 miles south of Sheboygan. One life was lost. Mike Illckey, drowned In trying to escape. The Atlanta Is valued, at, about Sl.vO.OOO. The Atlanta left Sheboygan at 10 o'clock aouthward with a crow of sixty men and two passengers, The fire was discovered at 11 15. The crew were at once set to work fighting the Ilames and the fight was kept up until 1 o'clock when Captain Mc-C'auley Mc-C'auley decided to abandon the ship. The crew and passengers were put off in the life boats and -were picked up by the tug Ressler without troublo as there was no sea running. Soon after the steamer Georgia hove In sight and toog the crew and pessengers of the burned vessel. The Georgia proceeded to this port, leaving leav-ing the Atlanta a total wreck. It Is thought the fire may have been started bv a carelessly thrown cigar. Mike Hlckey, a deckhand, was drowned in trying to escape from the llamcs. |
