March 19.-Not since the terrible snowsllde and blockade of the winter of 1SSI. when tho Denver & RIo Grande branch road between Alamosa and Durango was impassable ror rour weeks, has thcro been such trouble experienced in this region as at present. No trains havo arrived from Durango for seven days and every available man Is being taken to the largo snowslidcs on Ctunbres hl'l. . . , Six "dead" engines are snowed In between be-tween this place and Durango; also one of tho big rotary snowploughs. Tops of Trees Just Visible. A rotarv snowplough was sent from Snllda today, pushed by three engines. It hns been snowing continuously for seven days In the mountains west and south of Alamosa, anil tho canyons aro full or snow and In many places the tops of tall trees are Just visible. . Coal and edibles havo been sent from here to the working craws, nnd goods arc being talf-n to the snowed-ln trains on Cumbri'3 hill, lo keep the people there from starving |
