Show SHAMEFUL DELAY . . OF IMPORTANT MAIL. AVhlle Postolllce Inspector -f -r- Sharpe is cavortinR around the rf f country, as Is now charged, try- Ing to secure qvldcncu against employees of the R. P. O. ser- -V vice who are supposed to be sup- plylnp The TribuYie with data -f proving the mismanagement of -f -t- the Salt Lake postolllce, he is -f f- respectfully asked to report on -f -f this caae: -j. -f On Saturday, March 17, train -f No. S, which Is known as the 4- 4- Butte and Portland Express, and which Is due to arrive here at S;30 a. m., was delaytd until 2:30 p. m. This train carried 4- several tons of mall for the Salt Lake postofTlce and district, -f This mail laid at the station one -f 4- hour and five minutes before It -f was sent for by the Salt Lake postofTlce, although the postofTlce -f 4- was promptly notified of the -f- mall's arrival. ' , -f- -V PostofTlce t Inspector Sharpe f will not report on such things -f f as this, because it would reflect -f upon his friend, the Salt Lake -f postmaster. -f While he is directed to this ho 4- might, at the samo time, inves- -f f tlgate and report on the fact that f mail from train No. 10, due to 4- arrive here at 7:S5 p. m., and f which (did not arrive until 10 p. m., remained at the station from -f 10 o'clock p. m. Saturday, March 4- 17 until about 1 o'clock Sunday -f morning, although ,the Salt Lake -f 4- iKDStofflce was notified of Its ar- 4 4- rival. 4- On tho same date the Preston 4- 4" train, which is known as No. 12, 4- and which Is due to arrive at -f 4- 11:15 a. m.. was thirty minutes 4- 4- late. This mail laid at the sta- 4-4-' tion after the arrival of the train 4 4- twenty-five minutes. 4 4- Last Sunday the mall arriving 4- 4- over tho San 'Pedro from Lynn - 4- Junction laid at the station over 4 4- an hour after the train came in, 4 4- although the Salt Lake postof- 4 4- flee was notified to this effect. 4 4- These things have been going 4 4- on for a long time. Postmaster 4 4- Thomas knows about it and his 4 -J- explanation Is that the Govern- 4 4- ment does not appropriate a suf- 4 4- flclent sum for messenger service 4-4- here to properly handle malls 4-4- passing to and from the several 4-4- railway stations In the Snlt Lake 4-4- postofflee. 4-4- Postmaster Thomas and In- 4-4- spector Sharpe never seem sufTi- 4-4- cicntly interested In the public 4-4- to have these faults corrected. 4-4- Postmaster Thomas could call 4" 4- a messenger to meet this emer- 4-4- gency. and It would only cost a 4-4- few dollars to do so. but there 4-4- Is no one who ever heard of 4-4- Postmaster Thomas separating 4-4- himself from any ' money to ac- 4-4- commodate the public. As has 4 4- been said before, he shifts the 4-4- responsibilities of his own In- 4-4- competency as an organizer of 4-4- the postofTlce of Salt Lake on an 4-4- underpaid messenger, who him- 4-4- self is doing everything in his 4-4- power to carry out a contract 4 4- he foolishly entered into some 4-4 4-4 time ago. 4- Seeing that Postmaster Thorn- 4-4- as refuses to run the i lsk of 4-4- having to pay a few dollars for 4-4- emergency messengers, The 4-4- Tribune makes this proposal to 4-4 4-4 him: 4- When a special messenger Is 4- required to convoy mail to or 4-4- from the Salt Lake postofTlce 4-4- and the railway station In order 4-4- to properly dispatch or receive 4-4- the local mails, If Postmaster 4-4- Thomas will send the expense 4-4- bill to The Salt Lake Tribune It 4-4- will be promptly paid. Not only 4-4- is The Tribune willing to do this 4-4- because It Is personally Interest- 4-4- ed In the prompt receipt and 4-4- dispatch of malls, but it will 4-4- cheerfully pay for special sorvlce 4-I 4-I 4- when the regular meaeengor do- 4- 4- faults. 4- Now, Postmaster Thomas, It is 4- 4- up to you to give the people do- 4- 4- served service In this respect. 4- 4- There is no excuse for permitting 4- 4- tons ,and tons of mall to remain 4 4- in the postolllce at Salt Lake 4- 4- or at the Heveral railway sta- 4- lions for want of ample messen- 4 4- ger service. If your regular 4- 4- messenger. Postmaster Thomas. 4- 4- Is not at call, Hend for and swear 4- 4- In a special and send the bill to 4- The Tribune, and do not permit 4- 4- such outrageous evidences of 4- 4- neglect and indifference again to 4- 4- occur as are cited herewith 4-4- 4- 4- 4- 4-44- 4- 4- 4- 4- 4- 4- 4- |
