Show Ten lee Fail Several Hoodred Feel Cago Carrying1 Minors to Work Drops in Pennsylvania Collieay and All Are Killed. WILKESBARRE, Pa.. Nov. 2. During Dur-ing the lowering of the miners at the Auchcloss shaft of tho Delaware, Lackawanna Lack-awanna and Western company at Nan-tlcoke, Nan-tlcoke, eight miles south of here, today, the cageload of men was dropped to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of several sev-eral hundred feet. Ten men were In tho cage at the time and all of them were killed. It la said that the accident was not caused by the cable rope breaking, but that something went Avrong with the machinery in the engine-room and tho cage was carried with great force against the sheaves. It loft its fastenings fasten-ings and fell Into the sump at the bottom, bot-tom, which contained alx feet of water, and the men who wero not killed by the shock and force of the fall were drowned. A number', of rescuers are now at work clearing the place of the debris which covers the bodies of the men. . The victims, who were miners and laborer!', resided In Nantlcocke, and most of them leave families'. They were Poles or Slavs, with the exception of one, John Kemper. There are 3cventy-flvc miners and laborers in the mino dragging the sump for the bodies, and it may require, two or three days before any of the dead can be recovered. |
