Show Tom Carter Stirs Op Hornet's Nest Almost Causes a Riot in Addressing Political Meeting in Red Lodge, Montana. Special to Tho Tribune. RED LODGE, Mont.. Nov. 2. A dramatic dra-matic sceno was enacted at tho Republican Republi-can rally In this city tonight when former for-mer United States Senator Thomas H. Carter appealed to his audience to support sup-port tho candidacy of State Senator F. W. Meyer for re-election to tho Senate. About 300 of his hearers expressed their disapproval by rising to their feot and leaving tho hall. Led by a Minister. This remarkable exit was led by the Rev. G. C. Groves, Episcopal rector at Red Lodge, whoso sister. It is alleged, Meyer kissed and Insulted on a public street several weeks ago. The clergyman clergy-man addressed an appeal to the public. In which he sought to rid the town of Meyer, whom ho branded as a "moral assassin." Cause of Trouble. Former Senator Carter exhorted his audience au-dience to remember that the Legislative candidates elected next Tuesday will help elect a United States Senator, nnd as long as Senator Meyer had been renominated, he is deserving of being elected. Pastor Is Excited. "But I'vo got something to say, Senator Carter," camo an excited voice from tho center of tho hall, and tho Rcvcrond Groves, deathly pale from his emotions, sprang to his feet and appealed to tho audience to protect tho good namo of his sister. Riot Narrowly Averted. A riot seemed Imminent, when Sheriff Potter rushed to the excited minister's sldo and entreated him to Btop. Rev. Groves shouted for "all decent peoplo" to follow him. and the people, with tho exception of a handful of men, quit tho hall. Several men who hesitated following follow-ing the clergyman were pulled along by their wives. |
