He Issued an Order Regarding Disciplining Disci-plining of the Students and Rebellion Followed. BERKELEY. Cal.. Nov. 2. In open rebellion re-bellion against a new military rule requiring re-quiring them to march Into the classroom class-room for lectures on war tactics, tho students of the State university participated partici-pated this afternoon In tho most sensational sensa-tional scene ln the history of the Institution. Insti-tution. When Prof. William A. Setchell attempted to quell the disturbance the students Jeered his remarks and threw clods at him. It Is expected that the ringleaders will be summarily dismissed from college. Cause of Trouble. Tiro troublo was started among the ca-dola ca-dola a few days ago, when Capt. J. T. Nance, U. S. A., lho now commandant, arrived ar-rived to assume charge of the military department, de-partment, ln place of Capt. Henry Do II. Walte. capt. Nanco nan no sooner entered en-tered the classroom than the students acted in a boisterous manner. Finally Nance declared they would have to be disciplined and Issued an order that the collegians would have lo march Into the military lecture hall Strike Decided Upon. No sooner had the edict been sent forlh than tho collegians talked rebellion. This afternoon a strike was decided on. Instead In-stead of marching In regular order nearly ono thousand students appeared on the scene with a small boy dressed ln military mili-tary uniform and wearing a placard bearing bear-ing the name of. the commandant. The little fellow rang a bell at the students" bidding. In unison they shouted for Capt. Nance to come out. Hurry Call for Faculty. A hurry call was sent the faculty. Prof Setchell arrived and added to the excitement excite-ment by saying "I am much ashamed of you." boys. Don't you Intend to respect re-spect the authority of tho university. This Is a riot.
